BEWARE

Here are a few guidelines for choosing an individual or company to host/build your WEB site.

1) Domain Registration - Never allow them to register your Domain Name. I cannot tell you how many times I've had to go to battle with someone's provider over their domain name. ICANN's policy for Domain Name's is this, whoever has the dba registered, own's the domain. Going to ICANN is a costly process. You will have to pay all up-front fee's, and then sue the provider after you have won to recoup your costs. Fortunately, Texas has the Deceptive Trade Practices Act which allows awarding of treble damages. This is enough to scare most providers into releasing the domain name to the rightful owner.

The initial fee's paid to ICANN will be several hundred Dollars. And the costs climb quickly. So, save yourself from grief, never allow them to register your domain.

2) Hosting - Basic WEB site hosting should never cost more than $10.00 a month. xtreme-host.com and godaddy.com both offer hosting for under $5.00 a month.

It is best to register your domain with the people who are hosting your site. The main reason is that ICANN will not allow a transfer of a Domain for 60 days. There are several other reasons for doing this as well.

3) Bundled Packages - Are Ok, as long as they don't violate the first two rules.

4) WEB Site Costs - If you have found a template, and don't need modifications and the template is not for an ECOM/Shopping Cart site; then the cost of completing the WEB site should not exceed several hundred dollars. If the template is for an ECOM/Shopping cart site, good luck. Very few providers allow for extensive modifications of Shopping cart sites. The ones that I've seen that allow it, modifications are only available to the high-end carts, so you can expect to pay more per month. There are other ways to implement carts with custom templates, but for the person who is just starting out, it's an extreme cost for something you don't know if it's going to work.

For a basic WEB site, using templates is fine, you've saved the developer some time. And further, you may not need a developer at all if you want to learn Front Page and FTP.

http://www.icann.org - ICANN is the governing body over all domain names. All domain name disputes are settled here.
